Thyme - a naturally powerful way to fight off those winter bugs

This handy herb doesn’t just taste good on pizza, Thyme has powerful healing properties including it can help alleviate symptoms and shorten the duration of colds and flu! 

Thyme is a member of the mint family and comes from the Mediterranean.  It has been used since the early Greek and Roman empires and has a myriad of health benefits.  It is a powerful antifungal, mild expectorant, antiviral, antibacterial, helps detoxify the body, strengthen the immune system, and is anti-parasitic.

Thyme has a whole range of health benefits, including:

- It fights respiratory infections, coughs, colds, and the flu, bronchitis, sore throats, and asthma.

- Its powerful antibacterial properties kill various bacteria, including staphylococcus.

- Thyme oil purifies the air from bacteria including streptococcus, staphylococcus, and cryptococcal.

- It boosts blood circulation to accelerate healing and speeds up recuperating after an illness.

  

What’s even better, is you can easily grow this herb at home or pick it up fresh from the supermarket. 

Here’s a few of ways you can use Thyme to fight off colds and flu. 

 Thyme Tea: 1 ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or 3 teaspoon fresh) per cup of hot water.  Steep for 3-5 minutes.  You can also add freshly squeezed lemon and honey to taste. 

Drink one cup 3-4 times of thyme tea per day or until the discomfort improves

This tea is good for reducing inflammation in the mouth and throat from coughing or other cold symptoms. 

Gargle: You can also use this tea as a gargle solution to help relieve sore throats.  Let the tea cool and gargle it several times during the day. 

 

Steam inhalation:  Add a generous handful of fresh thyme or 2-3 drops of thyme oil into a large heat proof bowl, pour the boiling water over the herbs, place face above bowl, and quickly throw towel over head. Use caution: start high above bowl to avoid burning face. 

Inhale the steam for approximately 10 minutes or more.

 

 

Disinfectant spray: If you have sick kids or other adults in the house, you can pop a few drops of thyme oil into a spray bottle with water and use it to disinfect surfaces to help stop bacteria spreading.

 

You can find thyme in any good herb garden, you can pick it up to grow from a plant nursery, or even from the supermarket in the fresh produce department.

Warning:  Thyme is not recommended for use for cats or dogs,  so if you have pets, please exercise caution if you are using thyme oil .  Ensure you have adequate ventilation with open doors or windows if you diffuse thyme oil or use it in a burner.    For more on using essential oils safely around pets, check out our blog post.
