Famously been referred to as ‘The medicine chest of the Country People’, Elder has a long medicinal history. The flowers and berries have anti-viral, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
As well as supporting the body with fevers and flu, Elder may help reduce allergies and boost the immune system.
Today we’re focussing on Elderflower, which has many uses and benefits. These include:
- Elderflower is highly regarded by herbalists for the treatment of upper respiratory complaints especially to aid in conditions where there is excess mucous and congestion.
- Traditionally Elderflower tea helps support the fever process and can help shorten the duration of illness.
- Applied topically Elderflower may help reduce pain from arthritis as well as joint swelling.
- Elderflower as a mouth wash has antiseptic properties and can be used as a gargle for the throat.
- It may help reduce blood sugar levels and be beneficial for diabetics.
- Research in Ireland found that Elderflower was effective in killing many hospital bugs, including MRSA.
- Elderflower Water was a common skin treatment for sunburn and pimples.
Like with everything, too much of a good thing isn’t always good.
Elderflower can cause stomach upsets such as nausea and diarrhoea, especially when consumed in large amounts. If you are diabetic, exercise caution as it can lower blood sugar levels so monitor accordingly. If you are having surgery, avoid prior and immediately after surgery.
Elderberry is a very popular herb and is currently used extensively for the prevention of upper respiratory infections, in cough syrups and immune tonics.
Some concerns have been raised however about elderberry being used for COVID-19. Elderberry may stimulate cytokine release syndrome (CRS), which was considered a major cause of death with the SARS epidemic.
Some are reporting it may be similar for COVID-19.
Given there COVID-19 is such a new disease there is little to no evidence to support or refute this, so we advise caution. Elderberry can be taken up to the point of an infection, but not once you are sick. Or if you have concerns, use other immunity herbs instead.
