What's the big deal about Diatomaceous Earth?

We are so excited to be stocking Diatomaceous Earth (DE).  So what’s the big DEal about it?

Well let us tell you, this stuff is awesome.  It’s a completely natural, certified organic, food grade magical powder with a wide range of uses in the home and garden, As well as having health benefits for humans and animals.  In fact, it’s one of the most versatile health products on the market!

It’s a fine white powder made up of microscopic skeletons of algae, called diatoms,  that have fossilised over millions of years.  The diatoms in diatomaceous earth are largely made up of a chemical compound called silica. Silica is commonly found in nature as a component of everything from sand and rocks to plants and humans. It’s the concentrated levels of silica in DE that make it so special.

Diatomaceous earth is safe for humans and animals to consume and also beneficial for skin, so it’s used both inside and outside the body. There are two main types of diatomaceous earth: food grade, which is suitable for consumption, and filter grade, which is used in industrial products.  Only ever use food grade DE (which is what we stock).

Some of it's uses include:

Some of the health benefits of DE include:

  • Helps detoxify your system and remove heavy metals
  • Improves digestion, bowel and liver function
  • Stronger bones, joints and ligaments
  • Improved energy (because you don’t have all those toxins)
  • Protection from bacteria and viruses
  • Natural worming and parasite cleanse
  • Helps protect and strengthen skin, nails, and hair

You can add it to water and mix, or pop it in with a smoothie, porridge, yoghurt, juice, etc.

It can be used in beauty products including deodorant, face masks, exfoliants and more.

Pets & animals
Pets can take it too.  As well as all the above benefits, it can be used topically as a natural flea control for dogs and cats!  For chickens it helps control mites, worms, and produces healthier eggs and stronger shells.

Around the house, it can be used as a cleaner as well as a stain remover for oily stains. You can even clean jewellery and silverware with it.

Pest control
DE is a natural insecticide.  The silica in it affects the waxy outer layer of the insect’s exoskeleton, causes it to dehydrate and die. It’s a natural way to help eliminate fleas, dust mites, ticks, cockroches, ants, bed bugs without the use of harsh chemicals.

In the garden
DE can also be used in the garden to kill slugs, snails, beetles, and other unwanted pests.  It also boosts soil and helps retain water and nutrients.

These are just a few of the ways DE can be used to help your health, your pets, and around the home and garden.  There are literally 100s of uses for DE. We have it in bulk in store for $0.99c per 100g so you can buy as much or little as you need.
